Architecture is all around us. And while materials such as stone and wood are still in use, it is metal that is responsible for the modern society we live in today. From skyscrapers to ordinary homes, architectural metal fabrication is more popular than ever before, creating sleek eye-pleasing structures that last.

Stronghold Industries proudly offers architectural metal fabrication services in New York.

What is architectural metal fabrication?

Architectural metal fabrication is the process of shaping metal into a variety of objects to meet the needs of the consumer, particularly in the field of construction. The most commonly fabricated metal is carbon steel, but can also be copper, brass, titanium, and other metals.  Steel is durable and strong. That makes it the best choice if you want something that will last long into the future.

What are the processes of architectural metal fabrication?

Metal fabrication involves the hands of many skillful professionals over different processes.

Cutting

Metal needs to be cut in order to shape it, whether through sawing, chiseling, shearing, or torching. The type of metal determines what tool is necessary to do the job. In addition, the thickness of the metal also comes into play, as does hardness. Metal is cut by hand but is most often cut using machines such as water jets, mill bits, and lasers. Oxy-fuel and plasma torches also get the job done.

Bending

Many shapes require the bending of metal with manual or power hammering or by using press brakes and tube benders.

Casting

Casting shapes metal by melting it down into a liquid form and then pouring it into a mold.

Assembly

Once all of the pieces are ready, assembling begins. There are many ways to assemble metal pieces, including by using adhesives, rivets, and nuts and bolts. But the best way to put metal pieces together is to fuse them via welding.

Architectural Metal Fabrication Specialties

Just like there are several processes to fabricate the metal, your project may also require different specialties to complete each task in the process.

Welders

Welders fuse metal together by melting it in one of two ways.

Arc welding involves using alternate or direct current as a power source to create an electric arc between a welding rod and the metal. The rod, also known as an electrode, melts into a filler material to strengthen the bond between the pieces. This is the most preferable option of welding to fuse metal pieces together.

Torch welding by plasma torch uses acetylene as fuel to make a flame at the tip.  The welder then feeds an electrode by hand as the flame melts the metals along the joint. In addition, this kind of welding is also used for cutting.

Ironworkers

Ironworkers mostly assemble structures but also perform fabrication work. Stronghold Industries assembles and renovates prefabricated industrial structures, as well as large indoor and outdoor art installations throughout the Tri-State area.

Blacksmiths

Blacksmiths cut and bend metals using a forge and other tools such as hammers to make specific shapes.

Machine and Fabrication Shops

Stronghold Industries has on-site machine shops and fabrication shops capable of performing metal fabrication projects from start to finish.

Machine shops cut metal and machine very precise moving parts and anything else that requires precision and alignment. Our machine shop is capable of machining all types of custom pieces.

Fabrication shops prepare and assemble metal. We use an array of cutting techniques including plasma torches, plasma CNC machines, and a variety of saws to specifically cut and shape metal. For the assembly, we are capable of drilling into very thick metal plates and braces to allow for bolting and riveting, and we also have a team of welders.

Architectural Metal Fabrication Structures

There is no architectural project that Stronghold Industries can’t complete. We can build any kind of structure, including railings, staircases, doors, gates, roofs, fireplaces, steeples, trim, walls, framing, and more! We even work on ornamental and artistic projects.  Just let us know what you want and we will get to work designing and building your project to your specifications. We also perform repairs.

Cost of Architectural Metal Fabrication

Architectural metal fabrication costs range anywhere from $600 to over $6,000 depending on the kind of project you are looking to complete. Two main factors that determine price are fabricator efficiency and complexity of the process.

The more efficient the fabricators are, the better they are at meeting deadlines. The longer a project takes to complete, the more the cost will rise. How long a project takes to complete also depends on the complexity. Not every project is simple. Larger projects understandably take more time to complete.

The average price a household spends on metal fabrication in the United States is around $1,800. Most homeowners enjoy relatively low prices for metal fabrication projects.

Stronghold Industries is committed to finishing projects on time and on budget.
