Metal Fabrication

Metal fabrication refers to the cutting, shaping, or molding of metal material into a structure or product. It also includes any combination of these processes into a final product. The fabrication process uses a variety of methods in metal fabrication by a welding or fabrication shop.

Cutting

Shearing is one common method of cutting raw material. This process uses an upper blade that forces the metal onto a lower, stationary blade. This is ideal for small lengths and awkward shapes due to the ability to change the angles of the blades. The use of burn tables is also fairly frequent. This includes plasma and laser cutting tables, in addition to water jet cutters and CNC tables which are run by computers to cut a variety of shapes. Using torches may be another way to cut metal material.

Forming

Forming is the application of great force to flat sheets of metal to create 3D parts. Typically, this process does not add or remove material. Punch presses and dies are used in conjunction to create the forms. This type of metal fabrication is often used for mass production in automotive and construction industries, among others.

Welding

Joining two pieces of metal together is welding. Primarily, this process uses heat of some type. There are four main types of welding. Stick welding uses an stick with electrodes that creates an electric arc to weld. MIG, or Metal Insert Gas welding, uses gas and electrodes. TIG, or Tungsten Inert Gas welding uses an electrode made of tungsten as well as gas for shorter arcs which helps to weld heavier metals. Finally, the last type of welding, FCAW, Flux Cored Arc Welding, is very similar to MIG but it is portable and can only be used on heavier metals.
